Imagine…
Imagine a happy place where you know that your voice is heard… where your thoughts, feelings and ideas are valued… and you know that your voice is heard because your own interests shape the little world around you…
What wonderful journeys await you when you explore your inspirations? Wonderful journeys taken together with friends as you grow…
Children are learning how to learn as they discover the world around them… And they develop a love of learning and a taste for following their passions – whether it be exploring the movements of an ant or the waving arms of a tree or bringing a story book to life through transient art…
The impact of valuing the child’s voice creates a positive sense of self, a love of learning and an ability to engage with others and the world around them in a confident and positive way…
That is our vision.
Our pedagogy is based on the principle that children are capable and competent learners. We listen to our children's interests and respond to them appropriately in order to foster confidence, independence and to enable children to realise their potential as effective learners.
We feel inspired by the approaches of Reggio Emilia, Scandinavian early years education models and Forest School.
Our pedagogy is rooted in listening to the child's voice which allows children to develop a presence within the setting as respected and valued members within a community. The children's voices are heard and valued. Practitioners respond to the children's expressions by being a supportive peer and a helpful guide; enabling children to take ownership of their discoveries and learning.
We view the environment as an inspirational educator. We have transformed our setting to include natural and real resources rather than plastic toys which often can only be used in one way. Natural resources open up so many possibilities for children to explore, be creative, experiment and use their imagination. For younger babies, natural resources found in treasure baskets serve as a way for them to experience and develop their senses. Babies might engage in their earliest forms of verbal communication as they babble with joy while they explore a treasure basket alongside an adult. For older children, we have incorporated opportunities for loose parts play which opens up a plethora of possibilities. For example, pre-school children have recently begun experimenting with transient art.
Our passion for outdoor learning and Forest School goes hand in hand with our commitment to Reggio Emilia. Our trained forest school staff take a group of children for regular sessions in a local reserve where the children engage in fun, problem-solving, risk-taking activities. The activities undertaken are based on the children's interests and the risks taken are measured against the children's ability. A calculated risk might be, for example, allowing a child to balance along a log. Forest School enthuses children to engage with the outdoors and nature; it builds confidence, social skills and resilience. Please see our Forest School page for more information.
Through our vision, pedagogy and curriculum, we hope that our children will continue to have the confidence to pursue their interests and to develop a life-long love of learning.
Bumble Bees Day Nursery was established in 2005 by Maria Hamid, who had gained 30 years experience working in early years education. She had the support of her husband Sayed and children Dalia and Samir, who work at the nursery until today. Bumble Bees was initially set up as a traditional day nursery. Maria's vision was for the nursery to be homely and feel like home away from home. The nursery has always felt like a home away from home, especially as it is set within a residential street and within a detached double fronted family home. The nursery has retained its loving and homely feel throughout the years. Maria's passion for early years inspired her daughter, Dalia, to pursue a career in early years education. Dalia joined the nursery in 2008 while at university and in 2012, she completed a masters degree in Early Years Education at The Institute of Education. Having worked closely with her mother for several years, Dalia now manages the setting, overseeing all facets of provision.
The generational shift from mother to daughter encapsulates the changes happening within an ever evolving sector as a result of critical research which began to attract attention at a government level at roughly the turn of the century. The research in question (such as EPPE project) showed the profound impact that quality childhood education can have in the long term. Nurseries have already seen a shift away from largely care-based models towards approaches that put education and development at the forefront. We believe that the task at present for most nurseries is finding a philosophy and approach that will provide the most meaningful experiences for their children and importantly, to find a philosophy that practitioners believe in and are able to embrace.
Dalia's approach to early years education is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, Scandinavian models of early childhood education and Forest School. She has led the nursery through profound change over the last 5 years, from the physical environment, to the kinds of resources used, to practice and the programmes on offer.
